Per the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), you must have at least a third class medical certificate to become a private pilot

Private Pilot Requirements
40 hours minimum total flight
20 hours minimum of dual flight from an instructor which includes:
3 hours of cross-country flight training in a single-engine airplane
3 hours of night flight training in a single-engine airplane that includes:
One cross-country flight of over 100 nautical miles total distance
10 takeoffs and 10 landings to a full stop at an airport
3 hours of flight training in a single-engine airplane solely by reference to instruments
3 hours of flight training with an instructor 2 calendar months preceding the month of the test
10 hours minimum of solo flight time in a single-engine airplane which includes:
5 hours of solo cross-country time
One cross-country flight of 150 nautical miles, with full-stop landings at three points, and one segment consisting of more than 50 nautical miles
3 takeoffs and 3 landings to a full stop at an airport with an operating control tower
